on Peter Dörflinger's work:
His stone sculptures capture the viewer's gaze and thus seem to focus it ever more strongly, whereas his wood and paper sculptures seem to burst the horizon with their proliferation into the surrounding space.
In his work on stone, Peter Dörflinger "follows the structure of the stone ... ", hollowing it out in such a way that with sweeping curves and round forms, an apparently dematrialising variation of the original block emerges. [This impression of playful lightness is reinforced by the fact that the stone works usually only rest on one point, but are nevertheless stably balanced and can thus easily be made to rotate and swing.
In his paper works, Peter Dörflinger chooses a different "counter-analogous, yet in-phase" approach by stringing together paper tubes, boxes and specially assembled 3-dimensional bodies to form imaginative tubes, cubes and mountains - with countless views and glimpses into the interior of the sculpture - thus creating the infinite variety of moulded parts. These moulded parts are glued together like a scaffold with small and tiny pieces of paper and covered. With this resulting, mostly smooth and light surface, he reinforces the impression of weightless floating.

The diversity of his works means that Peter Dörflinger is actually reluctant to give his works names (he prefers to speak of work titles), presumably in order not to strip them of their content and thus reduce them to just one image or association.
Even if in one stone a Pietá can be recognised, in another the fin of a whale seems to emerge from the surface of the water, this is only one image of the sculpture in each case. Some stones are reminiscent of visionary architectures. Peter Dörflinger rarely has a decided plan when he begins to work. There is no deliberation: Now I'll work a reclining figure out of the stone, but he works directly into the material, wants to open up the blockiness of the stone, lets himself be guided by the material, perhaps takes into account the grain, the inclusions in the stone and then intuitively arrives either at simple or more complex forms.
